On the ride up to Bar Harbor, we stopped by Day’s Crabmeat and Lobster, which is conveniently located on Route 1 in Yarmouth (a stone’s throw from I-295). The shack was a super slice of Americana with bunting and American flags flying in the breeze. Live lobsters sat in a huge tank in the adjacent storefront, so this lobster meat was fresh and legit. Apparently, this place has been open for almost 90 years! Day’s had the most traditional lobster roll we ate on this trip: simply lobster dressed in mayo in a butter toasted split top bun.
There is nothing wrong with simple and traditional at all, especially when everything has been pretty much perfected. The lobster meat was fresh, tender, and had a great taste. There was a little more dressing than I would prefer, but it honestly did not take away from the taste of the lobster itself. A bonus was that they didn’t waste any space on iceberg lettuce filler, my kind of place! The split-top bun was pretty much perfectly toasted and gave the bite of roll a nice crunch at the outset.
The roll wasn’t expensive (caveat: my frame of reference is Boston, where a studio goes for like 20 million dollars), but it was a little small. We augmented it with a side of delicious fried clams, a great start to the trip!
