Sawyer’s Lobster Pound

Sawyer’s Lobster Pound is a little out of the way if you’re only staying on the Bar Harbor side of the island.  However, if you’re planning on visiting Bass Harbor Lighthouse or staying in Seawall Campground, this little place is worth a look-see.  This was the first time I was like, hey, maybe I shouldn’t just eat a whole lobster roll and instead we’ll split that and a lobster dinner.  Well, we ended up getting the foot-long lobster roll so it was still kind of like getting a whole lobster roll.

I think the best thing about Sawyer’s is the ambience.  It’s nestled in a primarily residential area (that seems sparsely populated) and looks out over this idyllic field.  Fifties music is piped to the outdoor patio and the shack itself has a pretty retro feel.  Visiting there felt like stepping back in time, which was pretty neat.

CATZ.

Also, a. had the keen eye to spot a cat, which is +1000 for a place in my book.

CORNZ and CLAWZ.

The lobster itself was certainly very delicious in both whole and roll form!  Bites of the lobster were fresh and tender with great flavor and the portions were enormous.  I don’t know if this is because we were also splitting a lobster dinner, but that half of a lobster roll was filled.  However (this is quite shocking for me to say), the bread was too buttered!  Yes.  TOO BUTTERED.  I’m a fan of the hot and buttered lobster roll (Neptune Oyster, drool…) which is, by definition, too buttered, but when you add that with a healthy dose of mayo, it loses some of the appeal.  Also, there was a lot of iceberg lettuce hanging around on the bottom of the roll.  No bueno.  This lobster roll had some pros and some cons, but in terms of lobster rolls, what’s most important?  For me: lobster quality is always first, then bread, then dressing.  So yes, I say, try this lobster roll because the meat is pretty damn good.

On a non lobster roll-related note, their ugly blueberry pie and assorted ice creams are something else!  A must buy.
